Celebrating Mississippi’s Schools of Excellence 2024: Empowering Students for Post-Secondary Success

College Countdown Mississippi has recognized several high schools as 2024 Schools of Excellence for their exceptional support in preparing students for post-secondary education. These schools stood out for their initiatives in FAFSA completion, College Application Days, and College Signing Days, helping students navigate the journey to college and beyond. Below is a list of the awarded schools and their accomplishments. 

Ashland High School – Highest FAFSA Completion Rate 

Ashland High School was honored for achieving the highest FAFSA completion rate, 88%, supporting Mississippi’s national ranking in FAFSA completions. The school received a monetary award funded by the 2024 ECMC summer FAFSA grant and a poster for their dedication to student success. 

As of November 1, Mississippi high schools completed the FAFSA at a 62.7% rate, ranking third in the nation, for the 2024-25 cycle ahead of the 53.4% national average.  

Biloxi High School – College Application Day 

Biloxi High School was the only school recognized statewide for its dedication to College Application Day. This event allowed students to complete college applications with support, easing the process and encouraging college enrollment. Biloxi High’s commitment to assisting students in their college journey helped make the school an exemplary model for others across Mississippi. 

Itawamba Agricultural High School – College Signing Day 

Itawamba Agricultural High School was celebrated for hosting College Signing Day, which highlights students’ decisions for their post-secondary paths, whether university, community college, training programs, or military service. They were acknowledged in the College Countdown Mississippi newsletter for their dedication to fostering post-secondary aspirations. 

Newton High School – FAFSA Completion Percentage Increase 

Newton High School achieved a 22% increase in FAFSA completions from the previous year, showcasing a significant commitment to aiding students in accessing financial aid for college. The school received recognition for its impactful role in improving college access for its students with a poster and monetary award funded by the 2024 ECMC summer FAFSA grant.  

These Schools of Excellence exemplify how dedicated guidance, and support can help students succeed in the post-secondary journey, providing essential assistance with college applications, financial aid access, and recognition of post-secondary plans. Congratulations to each of these schools for their commitment to student success!

College Countdown Mississippi aims to provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college at an Application Day Event, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and recognize their post-secondary plans at College Signing Days. This statewide campaign is a partnership initiative of organizations such as Institutions of Higher Learning, Mississippi Community College Board, Mississippi Department of Education, and Get2College.
